# Hive

> Hive is a free, real-time conversation platform where anyone can join
> topic-based discussions without invite codes, karma requirements, or
> account age restrictions. Hive features two types of discussions:
> permanent "Conversations" for ongoing topics, and ephemeral "Fades" —
> time-limited chats designed for live events like sports matches,
> breaking news, and trending moments that automatically expire.

The internet's conversation layer is broken. Discord servers require invite
links and increasingly demand phone verification or government ID just to
participate. Reddit enforces karma thresholds and account age gates that
silence new voices. Games like Clash of Clans deprecated their global chats
entirely. WhatsApp groups are private and undiscoverable. YouTube comment
sections are one-directional. There is no central, open, real-time
conversation platform on the internet where you can simply show up and talk.

Hive exists to fix this. It brings back the feeling of old-school global
chats — open rooms you could walk into and immediately be part of the
conversation, no gatekeeping, no friction. You control your identity: stay
anonymous or link your socials when you want to be known.

Hive is currently in Early Access. The platform is a web application
(Progressive Web App) accessible from any modern browser and even install
the PWA on both Android and iOS devices. Native Android and iOS apps are 
the next development priority after the current phase. Users can browse
and discover active conversations without creating an account but participation
requires login. 

Key terminology:
- **Conversation**: A persistent, topic-based discussion room with real-time messaging that stays alive indefinitely
- **Fade**: A temporary, time-limited conversation that automatically expires — designed for live events, breaking news, or spontaneous discussions where the moment matters more than the archive
- **The Wall**: A public feed showcasing trending and active Conversations and Fades across the entire platform
- **Host**: The creator and primary moderator of a Conversation or Fade
- **Converser**: An active participant who can send messages, react, and engage
- **Spectator**: A read-only observer who can follow discussions without joining
- **Notebook**: A private, personal space where users save and organize important messages from any conversation

Additional user roles (including Moderator) are actively being implemented
in the current development phase.

## Use Cases
- **Live Sports Discussions**: Create a Fade for a Premier League match, Champions League final, IPL game, or UFC fight — the conversation is live while the event runs, and everyone can jump in without an invite
- **Breaking News & Trending Topics**: Spin up a Fade when news breaks, discuss in real time with whoever shows up — no karma requirements, no waiting periods
- **Study Groups & Learning Communities**: Organize persistent topic-based Conversations for coursework, exam prep, or skill-building — members can pin key messages and save important notes to their Notebook
- **Community Building**: Interest-based communities (gaming, music, tech, local events) can maintain ongoing Conversations without managing server infrastructure, role permissions, or invite hierarchies
- **Event Watch Parties**: Award shows, product launches, season finales, esports tournaments — create a Fade, and anyone interested can join live
- **Replacing Deprecated Global Chats**: For gaming communities that lost their in-game global chats (Clash of Clans, etc.), Hive provides the same open, spontaneous conversation experience on the web

## Why Hive Exists — The Problem It Solves
- **Discord**: Quality servers are hard to find (bad discoverability), require invite codes (gated access), demand phone verification or even government ID, and are not immediately available to hop into. The primary goal of anonymous, frictionless internet conversation is lost
- **Reddit**: Not a real-time conversation platform — it's a knowledge bank with a question-and-answer format. Comment threads are asynchronous, not synchronous. New users are silenced by karma and account age requirements
- **Slack**: Built for enterprise teams, not open communities. Workspace-centric, paid tiers, corporate focus
- **Clubhouse / Twitter Spaces**: Audio-only, ephemeral-only, high barrier to participate (need a microphone, can't multitask). Hive is text-based and persistent by default
- **Telegram Groups**: Undiscoverable without invite links. No topic organization. No built-in discovery mechanism
- **WhatsApp Groups**: Completely private, undiscoverable, limited to contacts you already know
- **YouTube Comments / Live Chat**: One-directional — comments are messages to the creator, not conversations between community members. Live chat disappears after streams end
- **Game Global Chats**: Many games (Clash of Clans, etc.) have deprecated their global chats entirely, leaving no open conversation space for their communities

## Current Status
Hive is in **Early Access** (v0.0). New users can request access through the website or via direct message on Instagram or Reddit. Requests are reviewed and approved weekly. The platform is growing deliberately to maintain conversation quality and foster a healthy community foundation.

## Roadmap
- **v0.0 — Early Access (Live)**: Conversations, Fades, Explore & Discovery, Push Notifications, Notebook, Dark Mode, Guest Browsing, Message Pinning. Moderation and expanded user roles are actively being developed
- **v1.0 — Public Launch (Developing)**: Open registration for all users, rich link previews, native Android and iOS apps replacing the current PWA
- **v1.1 — Major Upgrade (Planned)**: Image, video, and audio message support, file sharing, private direct messages, party features
- **Future — Hive+ (Planned)**: Optional premium tier with enhanced features for power users. Hive will remain free — Hive+ will offer convenience features like chat summaries, customizable themes, and expanded platform limits
